What is the State Supreme Court?
The State Supreme Court is the highest court in Montana. It’s made up of seven elected justices, including one Chief Justice. Montanans vote on state Supreme Court Justices in nonpartisan elections to serve 8-year terms. There are no term limits for justices.
What does the State Supreme Court do?
The role of the Montana Supreme Court is to be fair, impartial, and independent from partisan political influences. The State Supreme Court uses the Montana Constitution, laws in statute {Montana Code Annotated}, and judicial precedent to make a decision.
